From the kitchen, Clifford begs Hepzibah to make the Judge go away but when the Judge hears Clifford’s voice he redoubles his efforts to get to him. The author called it, instead, a "Romance" but there is no romance in it, either, except a brief declaration of love for each other of two protagonists towards the end with all its unmistakable phoniness ("How can you love a simple girl like me?"
Hepzibah manages to fend him off and the Judge calms himself and returns to his friendly facade.

Because Hepzibah had warned her that Holgrave was a bit of a revolutionary, Phoebe is initially cautious to speak to him but she soon begins to feel at ease as she gets to know him.The two talk about Holgrave’s work in daguerreotypes and Phoebe says that she normally does not like the pictures as she finds that they tend to make people look stern. However, Alice is not dressed for the cold night and catches pneumonia from the weather, dying shortly afterward. The Judge tries to go into the house but Hepzibah shows up and blocks his way. He hypnotizes the girl and puts her into a trance. On one such occasion, Vedder notes that he wishes to retire and Clifford says that he has bigger plans for him. However, the experience of reading the book is more like wondering through a dreary haunted labyrinth. Eventually he'd had Maule hung for a witch, so that he could come into possession of that acreage to build a fine house for his own family, but which came with a curse from the dead man. That may be the author's preference, but I think most romance fans will be disappointed if they read this book. They enjoyed a long and happy life together. However, many of them are believed to have inherited a mysterious power from him.Hepzibah Pyncheon, now the sole occupant of the house of the seven gables, wakes one morning and sighs as she looks in the mirror at her aging face.
Smaller characters pop up in deftly crafted portraits and fantastic and wise passages and quotes litter the novel like gems in a treasure trove of gold coins.
An unexpected plot twist at the beginning of the book's final third leads to two chapters of excellent writing, one detailing Clifford and Hepzibah's flight on a train and the almost psychotic breakdAnother "great American novel" that really is one of the Great American Novels, this book is a surprisingly quick read, by turns charming and creepy, with a small but excellently drawn cast of characters ranging from the comically tragic but dignified Hepzibah, to the gracefully mysterious Holgrave. But I stuck it out.
Holgrave reveals that he knew about the hidden compartment on the portrait because he is a Maule and the parchment was hidden by Matthew Maule’s son when he built the house.Phoebe tells Uncle Venner that he may stay in an empty cottage on their property for free.
