Starting in May of 1958, the newly formed Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA) started studies of large space launch vehicles as part of their charter to lead the DoD’s (and the nation’s) space program. Although it too relied on the Centaur for high-altitude missions, the rocket was usable for low-Earth orbit without Centaur, which offered some flexibility in case Centaur ran into problems. The stage was powered by five Four fairings, located near the base of the rocket, help smooth airflow over the outboard F-1 engines. There were three versions designed and flown, the Saturn I, Saturn IB and Saturn V.
