McKennitt makes an effort to make sense of history, the old world (exemplified exceptionally by 'The Bony Swans'), and spirituality, with her ethereal, haunting music. 'Marrakesh Night Market' has a dark middle eastern vibe.
The instrumentation could be better too. The album feels like a period piece, very ancient and just barely of this world, and rather chilling in a beautiful way. Loreena McKennitt is one of my favorite vocalists but her talent doesn't necessarily translate to great albums. Songs range from atmospheric and dark (Mystic's Dream) to folk-y (Bonny Swans, Dark Night of the Soul) to mystically Arabic (Marrakesh Night Market, Santiago).

"The Mask and Mirror" has a few really good songs but not enough to make it great start to finish. "Marrakesh Night Market" reminds me of how there are some songs by Loreena McKennitt is one of the best female voice in the world. The Mask and Mirror contains songs that lift the veil to reveal the soul of McKennitt's work in eight dreamlike, Celtic-inspired tracks.
The liner notes on this CD attest to that and are a pleasure to read, which illustrates her journey to places which may still be hanging on to a wee bit of the past.

View credits, reviews, tracks and shop for the 1994 CD release of The Mask And Mirror on Discogs. "Book of Secrets" is her best and most consistent album. Side A runs for about 27 minutes, isn't this a lot?Does that affect the sound in any way? It's not bad, but it seems like an afterthought sometimes, something that was improved on "Book of Secrets" which is part of why that album is better.
