Though he was killed in the Philippines, one of his ships continued westward to Spain, accomplishing the first circumnavigation of Earth. The fleet sailed 20 September, 1519, from San Lucar de Barameda.
The Straits of Magellan, located at the Southern tip of South America are named for him. When we reached land, those men had formed in three divisions to the number of more than one thousand five hundred persons. After eight days, Magellan was able to covert the ruler to Christianity along with hundreds of natives. He was later offered employment as a member of crew aboard a Portuguese ship which he rejected. The best proof of his genius is that he circumnavigated the world, none having preceded him.Magellan has come to be renowned for his navigational skill and tenacity. In 1513 he joined the enormous 500-ship, 15,000-soldier force sent by King Manuel to Morocco to challenge the Moroccan governor who refused to pay its yearly tribute to the Portuguese empire. Clove was the most valuable spice in Europe during Magellan's day. Magellan served in Morocco for a brief period after Malacca. From Spain he sailed around South America, discovering the Strait of Magellan, and across the Pacific. He thought to stay here for a time, safe from the Portuguese, and rest his men and repair his ships, so as to arrive in good condition at the now not distant Moluccas. The ship brought back 533 hundredweight of cloves, which amply repaid the expenses of the voyage.Magellan himself did not reach his goal, the Spice Islands; yet he had accomplished the most difficult part of his task. He grew up in a wealthy family and served as a page in the royal court.
His father, Pedro Rui de Magalhães, married Alda de Mesquita, was the mayor of the town.
His parents died when he was still a boy and he became a court page in Lisbon.
He was convinced of being able in this way to find a way for the ' Asia shorter than around Africa.

Because of its apparent calmness, he named it Mar Pacifico, the Pacific Ocean.The voyage proceeded along the coast of South America and on December 18th headed west into the Pacific.
The other eleven men remained behind to guard the boats. He went on to marry Maria Caldera Beatriz Barbosa, with whom he had two children. They were the first known Europeans to see the great ocean, which Magellan named Little was known about the geography beyond South America at that time, and Magellan optimistically estimated that the trip across the Pacific would be rapid.
Feeling he was not sufficiently rewarded for his services, Magellan left the army without permission, leading to his disgrace with the king. There he took on more provisions.

Magellan was born in the Portuguese town of Sabrosa in or around 1480. He had, however, provided the skill and determination that made this achievement possible.There is no greater name than Ferdinand Magellan in the history of discovery. He also discovered a passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean that is today called the Straits of Magellan.
