These pups can be used to propagate your bromeliad once they've reached 6 inches in height. This one (NOID) was the first, starting a couple of months ago. I'll be keeping my pups on the parent plant until they are between 1/3 - 1/2 the size of the original plant or when the bromeliad starts to die back. There is adequate consolation, however: When the bromeliad's single bloom flush has run its course and the long-lasting flowers fade, many varieties continue to produce stunning foliage for quite some time. If the roots are still underdeveloped, the plant might not stay upright in the pot, moving freely around, resulting in damage. Remove the bromeliad from the plastic bag after seven to 10 days and fill the cup with water. Bromeliad pups can be removed from the mother plant, and grown individually. Then in late July my Billbergia nutans 'Variegata' bloomed.

The number of such pups may vary from one plant to another. This tells the bromeliad to begin focusing more energy on its pups. If it doesn't, you can get some more apples and repeat the process. 99% of the photographs on this blog were taken my me. You can see the leaves are still going strong, but post-bloom means that my bromeliad is nearing the end of its life.Take a pair of sharp scissors or shears and snip the flower head as close to the base of the stem as possible. Bromeliads like to work at their own pace, so you'll need lots of patience to coax blooms from some plants. Place your overgrown plant or pups into the new potting medium firmly, but not too deep or shallow, only up to the base of the leaves to prevent a crown rot. Simple theme.

The purple coloration of Billbergia 'Hallelujah' seem to have concentrated in the flowers...Yep, tillandsia are in the bromeliad family. In a natural growth cycle, a mature plant will send up a flower spike that includes small, sometimes insignificant flowers surrounded by showy bracts. I actually don't know how long it will take for my bromeliad to truly die back, but I'd imagine it would be at least two years—maybe up to four. While the mother plant eventually dies after blooming, many new pups are left--often for the next year or two. There are usually pups to carry on, so it's not a complete loss and the main plant can take a long time to die, I have one that bloomed several years ago and is just finally looking so bad that I cut it back.Great flowers.
