捕虜となった自機を撃ち落としてしまうと「救出失敗」であり、1000点は獲得できるものの、結果的に自機を1機失うことになる自機のストックがない状態でボス・ギャラガのトラクタービームに引っかかって捕虜にされてしまうと、ゲームオーバーになる最初は2ステージをクリアした後、以降は3ステージをクリアする毎に「チャレンジングステージ」となる。いわゆる「ボーナスステージ」であり、様々な編隊飛行をする敵機を撃ち落として得点を稼ぐと言うもの。このステージでは敵は全く攻撃して来ず、自機と当たる位置まで降下することもないので、チャレンジングステージで死ぬ事はない。飛行の仕方は、ほぼ単純な直線を描くもの、大きな円を描くもの、階段状に動くもの、8の字に動くもの、二手に分かれるもの等がある。編隊飛行は各編隊8機ずつ5組あるが、2組目にはボス・ギャラガが含まれており、勿論2発撃ち込む必要がある。
